Is Rwanda the Best Place for Gorilla Trekking

Whenever Rwanda is mentioned, many people’s mind rush to the endangered mountain gorilla. It is true this small country with the most densely population in the world, is gifted to be among the few countries in the world to house the rare mountain gorillas. Rwanda is regarded as the best destination for gorilla tracking. There is no word that can describe mountain gorilla tracking in the world but those who have got a chance to meet these apes in the wild say, ‘’there is no magical experience in the world than an encounter with the rare mountain gorillas’’. Many people in the world come to Rwanda specifically to see these endangered apes in the wild for at least 1-2 days while studying their behaviors as well as taking photography for a period of an hour with the animals.

There are only about 1000 remaining mountain gorillas that are left in the wild and a big number live in Uganda, Rwanda and the rest live in Democratic Republic of Congo. Many travelers prefer tracking the mountain gorillas of Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) are easy to track as compared to gorillas of Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), within one hour you can meet one of the gorilla groups and by 1.00pm you are at the lodge for lunch. Due to the park’s proximity, one can easily track and come back to Kigali or depart within one day. This means that its just 2-3 hours’ drive from Kigali Rwanda’s capital and largest city to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri Musanze district.

If one is interested in a day gorilla safari , one has to drive very fist from Kigali(accommodation) to kinigi park headquarters for a briefing from the park wardens before 7:00am about the dos and don’ts while with gorilla and then after follow the ranger guide to the forest to begin the activity. After tracking you drive back to Kigali or at the airport to meet your departure flight back home. This is very difficult in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo due to a long distance involved reaching the park(Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda or Virunga national park in DRC).

Rwanda has 12 habituated gorilla families (Habituated means they are used to short visits by humans.) 10 gorilla families are ready for tracking and the two are used for research purpose. In each gorilla family 8 members are only allowed to track meaning that 80 people track gorillas every day. These apes are fabulous fan to watch in their natural habitat meeting eye to eye with the silverback gorilla is a memorable moment in life very difficult to forget.

Gorilla tracking is regarded as the most expensive done activity, but it’s regarded as the most done Rwanda’s major tourist activity. Over 80% of travelers to Rwanda to do gorilla tracking. This has generated a lot of revenue to the government of Rwanda and hence improves the well-being of the people especially those that live near the park.

Gorilla permits costs US$1500 per person per tracking and this fee includes park entry fee,  ranger guide etc. Gorilla permits are sold at the Rwanda Tourism Board Offices (ORTPN) found in Kigali. For any gorilla tours and permits contact us we shall get back to you swiftly.

How to Keep Safe on Road While in East Africa

Road safety is number one priority for all travelers in every country because everyone wishes to reach their destinations without any inconveniences. in Africa, road accidents are very common and this is attributed to poor driving by the drivers and bad roads. It is estimated that 15% deaths in Africa are caused by road accidents. In East Africa this is still a problem and many people have lost both lives and property. It’s therefore very important for tourists to know some of the guides to keep safe while driving on some of the roads in these countries. Our emphasis will be on Uganda and Rwanda simply because it’s our area of operation when it comes to hiring out cars. Below are some of the tips to take note of;-

Know all the road signs;- this is very important especially for tourists interested in driving themselves in either Uganda or road. There are certain road signs which are placed on different roads to guide drivers on what to do and what to expect. Drivers must follow these sign post so as to avoid accidents. Some are so important in that if ignored one may get an accident for example the “humps ahead” sign.

Tie the belt; – before you start a car, make sure that you have tied the belt very well. Most drivers especially in Uganda ignore this putting their lives in danger. Belts help the driver to keep in control incase of any unexpected humps. Even during an accident it’s the belt to minimize the injuries by keeping both the driver and passengers on their seats. At our company, we always offer advice to our customers who rent our cars and tying the belts is one of them.

Keep left while driving in Uganda and left when in Rwanda

In Uganda, most cars are right-handed and they are required to keep left. This must be followed by drivers to ensure safety on the road.

In Rwanda, most cars are left-handed and drivers keep right. Tourists especially those planning to rent cars in Rwanda for use should take note of the driving rules that apply to this country. You should also take note of traffic laws to avoid misbehaving on the road.

Be patient while driving;-this is so vital especially when driving though busy places where there are many cars. Impatience is one of the causes of accidents in east Africa as drivers try to overtake even when they are not supposed to. They end up knocking pedestrians or even other cars. We always encourage drivers to keep in the correct lane while driving and only overtake where necessary. Patience on the road guarantees safety to your destination and therefore should not be ignored.

Know the rules and regulations on the road;- different countries have different rules and regulations when it comes to road usage and drivers are encouraged to know them to avoid being caught off guard by the traffic officers. The rules and regulations of Uganda are different from those of Rwanda and therefore a tourist should take note of them before driving a car.

The above tips are important and once followed, am sure you will get to your destination I n both Uganda and Rwanda without any problem.

Renting Cars in Uganda – Do You Have Enough Car insurance?

Many people who reserve a rental car in Uganda show up to the counter with little thought given to the “what if’s” that could result from them driving a car that is not their own. You wouldn’t think of driving your own car without coverage, so take a few moments to consider how you will make sure that your rental car is covered.

Here are 3 steps to take to ensure you have adequate coverage.

  1. When you’re calling the rental car company for a quote, find out how much the coverage costs and what it covers. Their rates for insurance/coverage may be higher but they also offer the least hassle, since you may not have to file a claim on your own insurance. Many car rental companies have a couple of options, including buying down the deductible to a hundred dollars (or so, depending on where you live) or even to zero.
  2. Contact your car insurance company. They may already cover you for rental cars in certain situations. For example, if your car is in the shop, they may automatically transfer your coverage and deductible to a rental car. This is a replacement-only type of coverage because they are covering you on a different car. For an additional cost, you may be able to purchase either a temporary or ongoing rider (depending on the insurance company) to cover your rental car even if your car is not in the shop. This is considered a non-replacement-type of coverage since you will need coverage on both cars because they potentially could both be driven.
  3. Contact your credit card company or check out the Cardholder’s Agreement. Your credit card may cover you for rental car insurance. Check to see that they cover you in your specific situation. For example, there are certain cars they cover (some don’t cover trucks or SUVs) or they may not cover you depending on where you drive or how long you have the car.

Armed with this knowledge, you can make an educated estimate of what the costs are to ensure that you are fully covered on your rental car. After all, you want to have peace-of-mind when you’re on your next trip.
